Abstract
Uterine motility during the estrous cycle of unrestrained ewes was assessed by monitoring pressures inside the uterine wall using a miniature pressure transducer and a radiotelemetric set-up. Measurements were possible at a distance of 20 meters.
An average of 1.4, 2.5 and 2.2 pressure-peaks per minute with an average amplitude of 20.5, 68.5 and 74.8 cm Y2O, were recorded in one ewe during proestrus, estrus and metestrus, respectively. During metestrus, 4 to 7 min. of successive pressure changes alternated with resting periods which lasted about 6 min. at the beginning of this stage, and became longer towards diestrus, in which very low pressure peaks or none at all were recorded. Similar results were obtained during 1 to 3 stages of the estrous cycle in each of four additional ewes.
The relationship between different methods of measuring uterine motility was discussed.
