Abstract
The mineral composition of cattle tissues obtained from three locations in Panama was determined. Fourteen Brahman cows (3 to 9 years oldaverage 6 years) in the El Real area, 19 Charolais x Brahman crossbred steers and one bull of similar breeding (2 to 3 years oldaverage 2.5 years) from Patiño, and 20 crossbred Brahman x Criollo steers (1 to 3 years oldaverage 2 years) near David were sampled. Diets of all cattle had consisted of pasture forage but some mineral supplementation of undetermined quantity and composition had apparently occurred. Tissue samples including the right metacarpal, liver, kidney, heart, spleen and muscle were analyzed for Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn. There were highly significant differences in tissue minerals due to geographic location in all the tissues studied. The average mineral concentrations, in general, appeared to be within the normal range. Average liver Cu for cattle from El Real was 21 ppm which was considerably lower than 120 and 126 ppm for cattle from David and Patiño, respectively. High Fe concentrations were found in the liver, spleen, muscle and bone of cattle from El Real. The highest tissue Cu concentrations were found in Patiño cattle. Similarly, Mn levels were higher (P<.01), except for liver and bone, in all tissues of Patiño cattle than in samples from other locations. All tissues examined from Patiño, except for bone, were lower in K than were tissues from the other locations. Geographic location had little effect on soft tissue P, Mg and Ca. Bone Mg and P levels were lower (P<.01) for the older cattle from El Real.
