Abstract
Cardiac output, blood pressure, blood volume and other cardiovascular parameters were determined on male and female ranch mink under sodium pentobarbital anesthesia. Cardiac output calculated by indocyanine green flow-dilution averaged 211.7 ml/kg/min. Mean blood pressure measured from the carotid artery was 153 mm Hg with a pulse pressure of 34.8 mm Hg. Heart rate for females, 298.5 beats/min., was significantly faster than for males, 250.6 beats/min.; hence, stroke volume was lower for females (0.72 ml) than for males (0.95 ml). Total peripheral resistance units per kilogram of body weight averaged 0.71 while mean circulation time was 14.8 seconds. Blood volume as a percentage of body weight measured by T-1824 dye-dilution showed no difference by sex and averaged 7.2% (71.5 ml/kg body weight). Because of a size difference between the sexes, total plasma volume and total blood volume differed.
