Plasma Levels of Insulin, Glucose, Growth Hormone, Free Fatty Acids and Amino Acids in Resting Swine1

Abstract

Fifteen crossbred gilts were used in this study. Resting blood samples were taken by catheter at 30-min. intervals over a 6-hr, time period. The relationships between insulin (I), glucose (G), free fatty acids (FFA), growth hormone (GH) and amino acids ({alpha}-NH) were studied. The correlation of I with G was 0.54, and the relationship of GH to G supports the hypothesis that GH level increases in response to lowered G level. As is indicated by the significant correlations, there is a tendency for the plasma levels of I, G and {alpha}-NH to vary in the same direction at the same time.
