Abstract
An experiment involving 32 gilts, initially, was conducted to evaluate the effect of including additional protein and/or antibiotics in simplified gestation diets based on barley on reproductive performance through two gestation-lactation cycles. Minerals and a limited amount of alfalfa hay were available free choice. No supplemental vitamins other than those in the natural ingredients were provided during gestation. The addition of soybean meal to the barley-based diet during gestation did not influence gilt weight gains, but did stimulate gain in sows during the second gestation-lactation. Antibiotic supplementation did not influence gilt or sow gains. Neither protein nor antibiotic supplementation influenced the number of pigs born alive but both decreased the number of pigs born dead in second litter sows. Adjustment of pig weights for the number of pigs per litter resulted in heavier birth weights as well as 2- and 3-week litter weights of pigs from gilts due to protein and antibiotic supplementation. Supplementation did not influence adjusted litter performance data of sows. No evidence of deficiencies of vitamins was observed.
