Abstract

A technique, utilizing implantable silicone tubing sensors attached to catheeter-transducer systems, was tested for measuring simultaneously seminal vesicle and vas deferens responses to hypogastric nerve stimulation in five anesthetized rabbits. For both organs, group mean responses to stimulus durations of from 1 to 5,000 msec. fit the equation log Ye=a+b log X. Coefficient of determination values of 0.957 and 0.965 for the seminal vesicle and vas deferens were highly significant (P<0.01). Mean±SE maximum pressure responses of the seminal vesicle and vas deferens to a 5-sec. stimulus were 82±23 and 49±18 mm Hg, respectively. The seminal vesicle value was similar to one reported earlier from this laboratory for conscious rabbits during emission (71±13 mm Hg) using the same technique; however, the vas deferens pressure was significantly lower (P<0.01) than the value reported previously for emission (184±23 mm Hg).

Using six anesthetized rabbits, seminal vesicle responses to six series of hypogastric nerve stimulation administered over an average period of 5.1±0.2 hr. did not vary significantly. Heart rates also were uniform throughout this time period. Thus, it was concluded that both the anesthetized rabbit preparation and this technique for measuring accessory sex organ contractions are suitable for certain studies of the ejaculatory process involving anesthetized rabbits.
