A Quarter Century of Artificial Insemination of Dairy Cattle: Are Changes and New Approaches Indicated?1, 2,

A. E. Freeman

Iowa State University, Ames 50010

Abstract

The three greatest needs of the industry are: (1) education of its members as to what is known that will increase the genetic worth of the dairy cow population for food production, (2) application of this knowledge and (3) defining and answering some old problems and new ones as they arise. Specific areas where additional work is likely to yield improvement are:

  1. Making clear what components of type conformation are important in food production and giving these proper emphasis.
  2. Identifying the parentage of grade cows.
  3. Increasing the proportion of the population tested.
  4. Decreasing the generation interval.
  5. Increasing the intensity and accuracy of pedigree selection.
  6. Economic considerations of alternative sire selection plans, especially for small populations.
  7. Continued improvement of sire evaluations from progeny tests.
  8. Education of dairymen to breed their top cows and first calf heifers to the best progeny tested bulls so that the resulting bull calves will be potentially available for young sires in AI.
