Abstract
An evaluation was made of the performance and some live and carcass measures of a sample of steers produced by Hereford dams and sired by bulls of Simmental, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Lincoln Red, Brown Swiss, Charolais, Angus and Hereford breeds. The steers were scored for physical traits of muscling, wastiness and size of frame as well as the conventional conformation score based on feeder grades.
Few differences existed among groups in conventional conformation scores. However, when the physical traits were scored separately, meaningful differences among groups in anatomical and compositional characteristics were apparent. Based on this sample and under the conditions imposed in this test, there were few significant differences in gain or feed conversion between groups of steers sired by the new breeds. All sire breed groups gained well and were efficient converters of feed.
Based on similarity of carcass characteristics, the groups were segregated according to origin of the breed of sire.
