The H Blood-Group System and Reproduction in Pigs

B. A. Rasmusen and Karen L. Hagen

University of Illinois,1 Urbana 61801

Abstract

Genotypes and phenotypes in the H blood-group system appear to be related to reproductive performance in pigs as a result both of incompatibility for the Ha factor and differences in fitness among genotypes for H-system alleles. The relative importance of different aspects of the effect of H type appears to differ between breeds. Utilization of information from blood typing to increase litter size seems possible, but for best results a detailed study of the H blood groups in the breed, and possibly the herd, to be improved seems essential.
