Abstract
A total of 262 cows and heifers were used in four experiments in an attempt to determine ovulation responses and fertilization rates and to produce multiple births in cows treated with one or two injections of a gonadotropin (FSH-P) dissolved in carboxymethyl cellulose or polyvinylpyrrolidone.
There were no differences in ovulation and fertilization rates between cattle receiving FSH-P in CMC or PVP. The first service conception rates following estrus synchronization and gonadotropin treatment were generally low (14 to 51%). The overall conception rates in experiments I, II and III for 32- to 70-day breeding seasons ranged from 50 to 93%. The percentage of cows calving multiple births was low in all treatment groups. Nine sets of twins and one set of triplets were produced resulting in calving rates of 43 to 98% of all cows bred and 105 to 114% of cows calving.
