Abstract

Nitrogen and energy balances were conducted to determine the digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) values and the protein digestibility (DP), apparent net protein utilization (NPU) and apparent biological value (BV) for brewers dried grain (BDG) and brewers dried grain with 5% brewers dried yeast (BDGY). Forty-eight crossbred pigs with an initial weight of 57.9 kg were fed diets containing 0, 27 and 52% (dry matter basis) of either BDG or BDGY substituted for equal amounts of a basal 14% protein corn-soybean meal diet fortified with minerals and vitamins. DP was 72.4% for BDG and 73.2% for BDGY. Apparent NPU was 29.6% for BDG and 33.2% for BDGY. Apparent BV was 40.9% for BDG and 45.3% for BDGY. DE was 52.3% for BDG and 55.8% for BDGY. ME uncorrected for N retained was 49.4% for BDG and 51.8% for BDGY. Corrected ME was 47.0% for BDG and 49.2% for BDGY. Based on gross energy obtained from regression analysis values and using coefficients determined in this study, DE and ME (kcal/g) uncorrected and corrected were, respectively: 2.65, 2.50 and 2.38 for BDG and 2.84, 2.63 and 2.50 for BDGY (dry matter basis).
