Saccharomyces Cervisiae Yeast Culture in Diets for Mechanically-Fed Neonatal Piglets and Early Growing Self-Fed Pigs

Abstract

SEVENTY-TWO pigs were used in each of two experiments to determine the effects of supplementing the diets with saccharomyces cervisiae yeast culture (SCYC) as measured by the performance of piglets fed individually in a mechanical feeder from 2 to 23 days of age followed by group feeding in a nursery from 23 to 65 or 72 days of age. At the 1.5 or 2.0% levels, SCYC fed from 2 to 23 days of age did not produce any significant (P< .05) effect on the average daily gain and gain/feed of the piglets compared to the control diets within experiment. However, SCYC fed at the 2.5% level from 2 to 23 days of age significantly (P<.05) depressed performance of the piglets compared to the control and 1.5% SCYC diets. Digestibilities of the dietary components in the control and 2.0% SCYC diets were similar in experiment 1. At 1.5, 2.0 or 2.5% of the diet, SCYC fed from 23 to 65 or 72 days of age did not have any significant (P<.05) effect on the performance of the pigs. A significant (P<.01) former (2 to 40 days of age) X subsequent (40 to 72 days of age) treatment interaction is discussed for experiment 2.
