Abstract
Three experiments were conducted with 180 female growing pigs to evaluate opaque-2 corn in a free-choice feeding system. Pigs fed free-choice gained more efficiently and at an equal rate to pigs fed mixed diets.
When fed free-choice, more opaque-2 corn was consumed in experiments 1 and 3 and 47, 30 and 35% less supplement was consumed in experiments 1, 2 and 3, respectively, than when the free-choice diet was normal corn and supplement. Rates of gain were similar and feed/gain was less when pigs were fed opaque-2 corn. Consumption of a soybean meal supplement or a soybean meal-meat meal-alfalfa meal supplement was similar as were gains and feed/gain of pigs fed these supplements free-choice with opaque-2 or normal corn.
The data reported here indicate that opaque-2 corn is superior to normal corn when fed in a free-choice feeding system.
