Abstract

COLOSTRUM and milk were collected from sows at intervals from farrowing to 35 days postpartum. Total nitrogen, casein nitrogen, heat-coagulated nitrogen (whey proteins coagulated by autoclaving), and residual nitrogen (total minus casein and heat-coagulated fractions), solids, gross energy and whey electrophoretic patterns were determined. Regression equations were fitted to the data by least squares. Total, casein and heat-coagulated nitrogen, as well as the electrophoretic whey protein fractions decreased dramatically from farrowing to about 48 hours. Total solids, gross energy and residual nitrogen underwent smaller changes. Equations of the form, y=axbcx, fitted the data well. Coefficients are presented to allow estimation of a number of milk components at various times after farrowing.
