The Role of Maternal Effects in Animal Breeding: II. Mitochrondria and Animal Inheritance1

Robert P. Wagner

University of Texasat Austin 78712

Abstract

In summary it may be stated that mitochondria are excellent candidates for demonstrating cytoplasmic inheritance in animals. Further than this their great importance in cell metabolism and their inter-relations with the nuclei in metabolism make it necessary that we study the pattern of inheritance through them in order better to understand the functioning of the eucaryote cell. And last it should be recognized that the etiology of diseases with obscure causes and puzzling patterns of inheritance may possibly be clarified by a further study of mitochondria using the tools of the geneticist.
