Abstract

DATA from 91 Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire barrows and gilts were used in developing equations for predicting carcass length from measurements on the live hogs. The hogs were restrained in a crate and ten linear measurements on the dorsal midline and two linear measurements on the lateral surface of each hog were taken. Of these, the measurement of length from the poll (nuchal crest) to tail (where it joined the body proper) on the dorsal midline (topline) accounted for 61% of the variance in actual carcass length. A combination of poll-to-tail length, unshrunk live weight, breed effects and sex effects accounted for 72% of the variance in carcass length. The standard error of estimate was 1.2 centimeters. These easily obtained weights and measurements should be of value in selecting live hogs for carcass length.
