Failure of Vasectomized Rams to Improve Sperm Transport in Inseminated Ewes

H. W. Hawk

U. S. Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Maryland 207051

Abstract

Sixty-Four ewes were inseminated artificially or naturally, then some of the ewes were penned individually with vasectomized rams for 24 hours. The ewes were killed either 24 hr. post-breeding for counting the numbers of sperm cells in various segments of the reproductive tract or 3 days post-breeding for observing ovum cleavage and numbers of accessory sperm in the zona pellucida.

Exposing either artificially inseminated or naturally mated ewes to vasectomized rams did not increase the numbers of sperm cells in the oviducts or uterus, and did not increase the number of accessory sperm in the zonae pellucidae.
