Abstract
CORNS which contain the Opaque-2 mutant gene have been shown to have an amino acid pattern in the endosperm which is different from that of normal corn (Mertz,Bates and Nelson, 1964). The superior nutritive value of Opaque-2 corns containing approximately 11% protein has been demonstrated for the rat (Mertz, Veron and Nelson, 1965a; Mertz et al., 1965b; Mertz, 1966) and for the pig (Pickett, 1966). Cromwell, Pickett and Beeson (1967) demonstrated that this superiority was due primarily to the increased lysine and tryptophan content. Opaque-2 corn has also been found to be superior to normal corn when fed to growing-finishing pigs in conventional corn-soybean meal diets (Cromwell et al., 1969). Lysine supplementation of Opaque-2 corn has been shown to increase the efficiency of gain for finishing pigs (Jensen, Becker and Harmon,1969).
The Opaque-2 gene has also been incorporated into a high-protein strain (Nelson, 1966b) and preliminary studies indicate that this high-protein Opaque-2 corn has a greater nutritive value than the Opaque-2 corn of lower protein content (Nelson, 1966a).
