Abstract
One-hundred-sixty-eight Finnsheep-cross lambs were started on artificial rearing regimens when 18 to 24 hr. old in 1969 and 1970. Lambs were allowed "Ewelac" milk replacer at 4 C, ad libitum, until abruptly weaned from milk at an average age of 44 days in 1969 and 31 days in 1970. ADG to weaning was 0.31±0.07 kg per day in 1969 and 0.30±0.06 in 1970; death losses from birth to weaning were 2.9 and 4.0%, respectively. Two pelleted diets were compared in 1970 during the first 51 days post-weaning. Both diets contained 18% CP and 68% TDN; fishmeal supplied
of the CP in the first while vegetable proteins were used in the second. ADG were 0.27±0.05 and 0.26±0.04 kg per day, respectively. ADG to 102 days, in 1969, was 0.26±0.03 kg for ewe lambs and 0.28±0.05 kg for ram lambs; ADG in 1970 was 0.21±0.02 kg for ewe lambs and 0.30±0.05 kg for ram lambs. Type of birth had no significant effect on ADG to 102 days during either year.
