Abstract
Experiments were conducted to assess the appropriateness of two procedures, based on plasma amino acid data, for the determination of limiting amino acids. The first procedure, the PAA Index did not identify the limiting amino acid of various dietary protens when fed to rats or when infused into the duodenum of sheep. The second procedure utilized a plasma amino acid reference pattern which was derived by feeding rats, bottle feeding lambs and goats or duodenally infusing sheep with high quality proteins. A plasma amino acid reference index (PAARI) was then calculated by expressing the plasma amino acid levels resulting from test proteins as a percent of the reference pattern. The lowest percent value indicated the limiting amino acid. For the species tested, the PAARI procedure correctly identified the supposed limiting amino acid of the various protein sources tested. The reference pattern derived here for rats and sheep also correctly identified the limiting amino acids of various proteins from some of the plasma amino acid data previously published. The PAAR-Index requires the establishment of an appropriate plasma amino acid reference pattern. Presumably such reference patterns would have to be established for each specie uner study as well as for various physiological states of the animal.
