Abstract

RESEARCH has shown that the efficiency with which microorganisms are able to convert urea to bacterial protein can be enhanced by supplying certain sources of unidentified urea-protein factors (UUPF) (Beeson and Hatch, 1970). Dehydrated alfalfa meal (DEHY) and distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) generally have been accepted as sources of unidentified nutrients which will increase the utilization of urea in ruminant diets (Garrigus, 1964; Beeson, Mohler and Perry, 1964; Bradley et al., 1965; Conrad and Hibbs, 1967; Horn and Beeson, 1969). Little, Mitchell and Bradley (1964) and Little, Potter and Mitchell (1967) have presented data which suggest that the rumen stimulatory properties of distillers dried solubles are in part due to the amino acid proline.

This study was undertaken in an effort to determine (1) the effects of adding corn distillers solubles (DS) to a liquid high-urea supplement, (2) the effects of adding brewers dried grains with yeast (BDGY) to a urea-containing ration for beef steers, or (3) the effect of replacing dehydrated alfalfa meal (DEHY) with DDGS or BDGY.
