Abstract

Twenty-eight yearling Holstein heifers were randomly assigned to each of four corn stover silage rations to determine the level of supplemental energy required to obtain the growth response recommended by the National Research Council (N.R.C.). The four stover silage complete rations contained 0.81, 0.92, 1.03 and 1.14 Meal estimated net energy (ENE) per kilogram of complete feed. Addition of increasing increments of ENE produced a linear increase (P<.01) in daily body weight gains of 0.34, 0.43, 0.58 and 0.68 kg for the four rations, respectively. Total dry matter and ENE intake increased linearly (P<.01) with increasing ENE concentration of the rations. Under the conditions of this study, a total ENE content of corn stover silage ration of approximately 1.06 Meal per kilogram ration could have produced the growth response recommended by N.R.C. for dairy heifers.
