Effect of Diet Composition on Diet Preference by Lambs

Hudson A. Glimp1

Abstract

One hundred and fifty-two Targhee-type ewe lambs were used in a study to evaluate the effects of diet energy level on diet preference over time. Lambs from two weaning dates and in three pens within each weaning date were provided free choice four diets containing from a low of 63.0% to a high of 76.2% total digestible nutrients. Consumption of each diet was measured during four successive 2-week periods.

A significant (P<.01) diet concentrate level x period x weaning date interaction was observed. Lambs changed from little discrimination among diets during the first 2 weeks to an increasing proportion of daily intake from the high concentrate diets as the trial progressed. This transition was faster in lambs from the second weaning group and was apparently related to higher temperature.
