Effect of Age on the Energy Requirements of Lactating Hereford Cows¹

Abstract

There is a paucity of information on the extent to which age influences the energy requirement of cattle, especially those over 2 years of age. Information of this nature would be useful to research workers as well as to commercial beef cattlemen formulating decisions on the number of heifers to be used as herd replacements, on the appropriate time for culling specific cows in the herd and on the amount of feed needed to furnish the energy requirements of a herd of lactating beef cattle.

The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the energy requirements of lactating Hereford cows are affected by their age which, in this study, varied from 2 (young) to 6 (mature) to 12 (aged) years of age. A secondary objective was to determine the energy requirements for maintenance, milk production and weight gain for lactating Hereford cows based on a ration of known total digestible nutrient (TDN) content.
