Abstract

The free ammo acid content in the seminal plasma of bulls fed various natural diets has been described (Gassner and Hopwood, 1952; Bhargava, Bishop and Work, 1959; Graham et al., 1964; Roussel and Stallcup, 1967; Hopwood and Gassner, 1962) but data are not available concerning the free amino acid pattern in the seminal plasma of bulls fed purified diets. The present study was conducted to study the free amino acid pattern in the blood and seminal plasma obtained from bulls fed protein-free and protein-containing purified diets to that of bulls fed a natural diet. The sexual behavior, anatomical development and the characteristics of the ejaculates obtained from the bulls has been reported in the preceding manuscript (Johnson et al., 1971).

Five Angus bulls were reared from 84 days of age on purified diets containing either urea (UD) or isolated soy protein (SD) as the sole sources of dietary nitrogen (Oltjen, Bond and Richardson, 1969a).
