Puberty And Related Phenomena in Angoni (Short Horn Zebu) Bulls

G. Igboeli and A. M. Rakha1

National Council for Scientific Research, Zambia,2

Abstract

A total of 28 Angoni bull calves was slaughtered between 0 and 17 months of age to determine pubertal changes in endocrine and reproductive organ characteristics. Appearance of sperm in the epididymides at 11 months (puberty) was accompained by a sudden increase in weights of testes, epididymides and seminal vesicles. Pituitary FSH and ICSH concentrations declined at 2 months, and the pituitary ICSH, pituitary ICSH:FSH ratio, and seminal vesicular fructose increased markedly at 7 to 9 months. Total gonadal and extragonadal sperm totaled 8.0 x 109 and 6.4 x 109, respectively, at 17 months of age.
