Energy Value of Cottonseed Meal for Swine1

Abstract

Two series of three balance trials were conducted with six growing Yorkshire barrows to determine the digestible energy (DE), unadjusted metabolizable energy (U-ME) and metabolizable energy adjusted for N-retention (ME) of five samples of cottonseed meal. Average weight of the six pigs at the start of the first series was 17.4 kg and that of the six pigs at the start of the second series was 22.5 kilograms. Cottonseed meals tested were 50%, 44% and 41% prepress solvent and 44% and 41% screw press. All meals were fed with a basal diet and the values were calculated by difference.

The 44% screw press meal had a significantly higher DE value than either 41% screw press or 41% prepress solvent cottonseed meal. The five meals did not differ significantly in their U-ME or ME content. The average GE, DE, U-ME and ME for all meals were in kcal/g of dry matter: 4.762, 3.012, 2.744 and 2.564, respectively. Adjusting the metabolizable energy for nitrogen retention reduced the value by 6.5%. Compared with current, calculated values, the experimentally determined values were slightly lower.
