Abstract
The study of body composition has been a subject of considerable interest to scientists in many disciplines. The several symposia held on the subject and the many reviews written on its varied aspects attest to this. The fact that the American Society of Animal Science has a regular session on this subject at its annual meeting is evidence of a strong continuing interest in this area of research.
Knowledge on body composition is valuable from at least three important standpoints. First, as human beings, we seek an explanation for the observed deviations from the normal, at the clinical level, in the composition of the human body. As careful weight watchers at the more personal level, we are also continuingly conscious of the effect that nutritional and other factors, such as exercise may have upon our weight.
Secondly, our interest in body composition arises from the fact that we maintain and raise farm livestock.
