Abstract
Histological changes in the ovary, and changes in plasma progesterone during and after the period of treatment with the progestin, melengestrol acetate (MGA), were related to each other and to subsequent synchronization of estrus, and fertilization. Progesterone concentrations fluctuated during treatment and remained above normal after treatment. Heifers being treated with MGA had fewer normal growing follicles than controls but there was a rapid return to normal in most heifers after treatment ceased. Elevated levels of progesterone during progestin treatment were associated with hyperplasia of both the granulosa and theca interna in non-atretic follicles. Atretic follicles with proliferative theca were also observed.
