Abstract
THERE is a wealth of recent research delving into the matter of identifying traits and characteristics of individuals as a means of "getting the right man" to "get the job done." You can get some idea of the depth and magnitude of things to look for in an individual by reading Cummings and Scott's (1969) review work in this area.
There is a lot of preparation work before anybody takes a look at you. First of all, there is the matter of a job opening. Some manager in industry who has the responsibility of maximizing or contributing to profits decides (perhaps decided on the basis of a higher Profitability Index than competing investment opportunities) that if additional work were done it would contribute to or improve profits. When the job specifications are developed, a spot on the organizational chart is created and now an opening exists. The job specifications include the characteristics of a desired individual.
