Abstract
INTEREST is increasing in the use of hormones to control or manipulate the estrous cycle and breeding season of sheep. Complete understanding of the role estrogen plays, not only in preparing the uterus for pregnancy but also in the estrous and ovulatory mechanism, may lead to more effective methods for artificially controlling the reproductive cycle.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of estradiol-17ß on ovulation rate and fertility when given alone and in combination with PMS in estrous synchronized ewes during the normal breeding season.
Materials and Methods
The experimental study was conducted in three trials. Trial 1 involved 121 mature ewes of mixed ages representing the Columbia, Rambouillet and Targhee breeds. The ewes were randomized within breed and age to 13 treatments (table 1). The effects of treatment on estrus and number of corpora lutea (CL) were studied in the first two trials. In trial 3 fertility and the number of embryos was observed in addition to estrus and number of CL.
