Abstract
Corpora lutea were removed on days 4, 8 or 12 of the estrous cycle in sheep. Ewes were killed on day 8 after the first post-treatment estrus or on the 10th day after surgery if estrus did not occur. Following removal of 2 CL the follicular fluid weight was greater (P<.01) than for removal of 1 CL. The most marked difference in weight of luteal fluid (fluid enclosed within a luteal structure) between removal of 2 CL and removal of 1 CL was in the day 8 group (avg of day 4 plus day 12 groups vs. day 8, interaction, P<.005). Mean weight of luteal tissue per ewe was also greater (P<.05) in the day 8 group than for the mean of day 4 plus day 12 groups. The number of cysts formed was greater (P<.05) following removal on day 8, particularly when 2 CL were removed, as compared to the mean following removal of 1 or 2 CL on day 4 and day 12. However, removal of 2 CL on day 8 decreased (P<.05) the number of normal appearing CL at autopsy.
Intravenous injection 24 hr. following CL removal at day 8 of a pituitary gonadotropin preparation containing both FSH and LH increased (P<.05) the number of luteinized cysts found at autopsy over CL removal alone.
