Abstract
Polar and nonpolar extracts of oat hulls were prepared using conventional extraction procedures resulting in the formation of extracts of various composition. These extracts were investigated in swine for ulcer preventing properties. The polar (alcohol) extract from oat hulls was found to exert a significant protective effect for swine maintained on an ulcer-ogenic diet consisting mainly of gelatinized corn. The alcohol extract was also found to be a potent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion in the pig.
