Abstract
THE effectiveness of selection is increased when non-genetic sources of variation among the individuals in the population are reduced. A major non-genetic factor affecting weaning weights of beef calves is the age of the dam. As long as dams of different ages are present in the cow herd, one method available to the breeder for reducing the age of dam effect on weaning weights is the use of appropriate correction factors.
When sufficient data are available, the best correction factors are those developed from a statistical analysis of the records of the herd in which they will be used. For the purpose of this study, these are referred to as herd correction factors and are designated HCF. In1965, the U. S. Beef Cattle Records Committee recommended a set of multiplicative adjustments for age of dam to be used in general by the beef cattle industry. These are referred to as industry correction factors and designated ICF.
