Abstract
Five hundred and forty-seven yearling and 2-year-old Hereford and Angus heifers were used in a study to determine the effect of an implant containing 120 mg testosterone and 24 mg DES, 0.40 mg oral MGA per head per day, or the combination of the two on growth and carcass traits.
Heifers fed MGA only gained faster for the total feeding period than those on the other two treatments. Differences in carcass traits generally did not show a consistent treatment effect. Hereford heifers gained faster and had lower carcass quality than Angus heifers. Two-year-old heifers gained faster and had lower carcass quality and estimated cutability than yearling heifers. No consistent differential response to treatments existed among the breeds or ages of heifers used in this study.
