Bovine Serum Lipids. I. The Influence of Added Animal Fat to the Ration1

Abstract

The influence of 0, 5, 10 and 15% added animal fat to the ration on bovine total serum lipid levels and on the fatty acid composition of the four serum lipid fractions was investigated. As the percent of dietary lipid increased, serum lipid levels increased. However, the concentrate level of the ration appeared to diminish this effect.

Dietary fat levels significantly (P<.05) changed many of the fatty acid levels of the four serum lipid fractions. The greatest changes were observed in the cholesterol ester and phospholipid fractions. The levels of C18:l, C18:2 and C18:3 were influenced to the greatest degree by dietary lipid levels. Furthermore, sample period significantly (P<.05) influenced the levels of certain fatty acids within the various serum lipid fractions.
