Biological Implications of Intensive Swine Rearing Systems1

Abstract

The trend toward more intensive swine rearing systems will continue. As specialization increases, enterprises will become larger and more sophisticated, with a greater demand for more precise control of all those factors implicated in affecting production efficiency. Thus continuing efforts must be expended to identify the management, environmental, nutritional and facilities factors that affect biological and behavioral patterns. Feasible methods for control of these factors must then be established. Multi-discipline research efforts will be essential to integrate these physical and biological principles into programs of economic advantage.
