Abstract
Sanitation principles necessary to rear small or large groups of calves for veal or beef purposes are fundamental, and there is little room for compromise. Disease problems in dairy-beef calves after weaning can be practically eliminated by sound feeding practices and preventing contamination of feed. Losses of over 5% of the baby calves up to weaning age can be prevented without expensive medication or housing, but losses can exceed 50% where basis sanitation principles are ignored.
