Abstract

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to phenotype serum transferrins (Tf) and pre-albumins (Pa) in 84 sows, 44 boars and 538 progeny of Duroc and Yorkshire swine selected for backfat thickness for 11 and nine generations, respectively. Each breed group consisted of high-fat, low-fat and control lines. The parents and 401 progeny were probed for backfat thickness at 77.3 to 81.8 kilograms. The Duroc gene frequencies were TfA, 0.000; TfB, 0.996; TfC, 0.004; PaA, 0.49; PaB, 0.51. The Yorkshire gene frequencies were TfA, 0.45; TfB, 0.55; TfC, 0.00; PaA, 0.98; PaB, 0.02. The observed phenotypic distributions did not deviate from that expected by segregation analysis. There was no significant (P>.05) difference in backfat thickness between pre-albumin phenotypes in the Duroc group or between transferrin phenotypes in the Yorkshire group by a least squares analysis of variance.
