Physiological Behaviour of a Natural Iron Chelate: The CA Chlorophyllinate Fed to Veal Calves1

Abstract

The inclusion of Ca chlorophyllinate in the milk diet of veal calves, at the rate of 2 g per liter of milk effectively chelated the undesirable iron which was obtained from foreign sources. By the complex which it formed with iron, it accelerated the iron excretion rate in feces to 74% of the ingested dose during the first week following treatment. Due to its low cost and to its chelating ability, the utilization of Ca chlorophyllinate appears valuable in some areas where the production of veal calves may be of practical economic interest.
