Abstract
The National Research Council, Committee on Nutrient Requirements of Swine (1968) suggests that the earlier evidence on unidentified factors should be reexamined in view of more exact information on recognized nutrients. The possibility of certain ingredients contributing either or both organic and and inorganic components other than known nutrients for the growing pig has not been precluded by the NRC Swine Committee (1968). Plumlee et al. (1966) reported improved baby pig gains by the inclusion of corn distillers dried solubles or the methanol soluble fraction in semi-purified diets. Both corn distillers dried solubles and fish solubles improved the performance of baby pigs fed diets containing a high level of dried skimmilk in experiments reported by Gage et al. (1961). Becker, Jensen and Terrill (1960) concluded that performance of growing pigs was not improved by additions of dried corn distillers solubles, dried corn distillers grains with solubles, dried whey, dehydrated alfalfa meal, or condensed fish solubles to a cornsoybean meal diet fortified with minerals, vitamins and antibiotics.
