Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to compare two plastic grid methods of measuring the area of longissimus tracings with the planimeter method. Results of this study indicate that the planimeter method of measuring the area of a tracing is more precise than either the dot grid or square grid method. However, the differences between the methods in the precision of their measurement were not statistically significant. Shape of the tracing as used in this study did not affect the precision of measurement but there was an increase in measurement error with an increase in size of tracing. The methods did not appear to differ in the precision of measurement as the size of the tracing increased.
The areas measured using the planimeter were smaller than the areas obtained using either of the grid methods. In each case the differences represent about 1% of the mean area, suggesting little practical difference among the methods.
