Growth, Hemoglobin, Body Composition and Vitamin A of Sheep Fed Dieldrin

K. L. Davison1, 2,

U. S. Department of Agriculture

Abstract

Dieldrin was fed daily to 135 wether lambs at levels of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mg per kg body weight in rations with or without added fat or carbohydrates in a 3 x 5 factorial experiment. Two sheep from each treatment group were slaughtered at 0, 4, 8, 16 and 32 weeks. Body weight was determined biweekly. Hemoglobin and plasma vitamin A were determined monthly. Liver vitamin A and the carcass fat and protein content were determined at slaughter. Ten of 12 sheep fed the 4-mg level of dieldrin died by the fourth week. Dieldrin fed at the 2-mg level reduced rate of gain and accumulation of body fat, and reduced level of the vitamin A in the plasma. Lower levels of dieldrin did not affect growth, body fat or plasma vitamin A. Dieldrin did not affect hemoglobin, hematocrit or liver vitamin A.
