Abstract

Liver biopsies and jugular blood samples were taken from 12 yearling Holstein steers and analyzed for carotene and vitamin A. On the basis of liver vitamin A concentrations, the animals were paired and fed rations consisting of grain and either corn silage or alfalfa hay pellets. Plasma and liver carotene and vitamin A concentrations determined 3 times during the 109-day experiment were adjusted for differences in carotene intake of the steers. Pellet-fed steers had higher adjusted plasma carotene and liver vitamin A concentrations than silage-fed steers. Adjusted plasma vitamin A values were higher for the silage-fed steers.
