Abstract
Research at various experiment stations previously bas demonstrated the growth stimulatory effect of diethylstilbestrol (DES) when subcutaneously implanted in either the suckling female or the castrate-male lamb. Also, a significant increase in the efficiency of feed conversion has been reported (Andrews, Beeson and Harper, 1949; Andrews and Beeson, 1953; Butcher and Raleigh, 1962; Jordan, 1950; Pope et al., 1951; O'Mary et al., 1952; Galloway et al., 1952; Means, Andrews and Beeson, 1953; Clegg and Cole, 1954; Clegg et al., 1955; Bell, Smith and Erhart, 1954; Whiting, Clark and Allen, 1954; Wilkinson et al., 1955). Garrett (1964) and Troelsen and Myhr (1966) reported inconsistent results from DES implants. Although Jordan and Dinusson (1950) were unable to stimulate gain in suckling lambs with stilbestrol, Perry, Andrews and Beeson (1951) reported a highly significant increase in the daily gain of suckling lambs (ewes and castrate-males) on pasture following DES implantation at levels of 12 or 24 milligrams.
