Abstract
The objectives of this study were to control the time of estrus and the ovulation rate in the pig for experiments dealing with surgical transfer of ova and blastocysts. Estrous cycles were controlled in 166 cycling gilts by feeding ICI 33828 for 20 days to suppress estrus. A dose of 1,000, 1,250 or 1,500 IU of pregnant mare serum (PMS) the day ICI 33828 was withdrawn and 850 IU human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) 96 hr. later stimulated and controlled ovulation rate. Ninety percent of the gilts exhibited estrus in a 2-day period, either on the day of HCG injection or the following day. The conception rate was 91% as determined by microscopic examination of ova in 68 gilts on days 4 to 8. Ovulation rates averaged 15.5, 22.5 and 20.3 for 1,000, 1,250 and 1,500 IU PMS, respectively. The ovulation rate in animals in a control group not receiving ICI 33828 or PMS averaged 11.7. The month in which estrus occurred, holding the effect due to level of PMS constant, and the average maximum daily temperature during the 4 days before ovulation significantly affected ovulation rate.
