Abstract

The effects of prostaglandins E1 and F1{alpha} on oxygen consumption and glucose metabolism of ejaculated and epididymal sperm cells were studied in vitro. Samples were taken from four rams for each experiment. Prostaglandins had no effect on ejaculated sperm. Both PGE1 and PGFla increased (P<.01 and P<.05, respectively) oxidation of glucose to CO2 by epididymal sperm. PGF1{alpha} reduced oxygen consumption by epididymal sperm (P<.05) while PGE1 had no effect.
