Abstract
Baled and pelleted baled alfalfa hay was fed to six lactating dairy cows in a 3 x 3 extra-period Latin square change-over design with 2 blocks. During each period cows received: (1) their maintenance plus half lactation requirements from baled alfalfa (level 1); (2) level 1 plus additional baled alfalfa and (3) level one plus additional pelleted hay. Thus, the baled form was fed at two levels and the pellets at one upper level. NEp equaled milk plus weight energy change. In this study NEp values are normally based on differences in production resulting from two levels of feed intake above maintenance and are attributed to this feed increment. However, if NEp/unit of feed intake decreases with increasing intake, these values would best be expressed as the total production/intake above maintenance. The NEp/unit of baled hay varied with level of intake above maintenance. The NEp of baled hay intake of 47.3 and 87.3 g/W.75 was 1.268 and 1.041 kcal/g, respectively. The NEp of the lower intake of 47.3 g was 1.268 and for the additional 40.0 g (87.347.3) 0.770. The kcal NEp/W.75 of baled alfalfa fed above maintenance can be determined at any metabolizable energy (ME) intake by the equation:
