Cooperative Regional Studies with Growing Swine: Effects of Source of Ingredients, form of Diet and Location on Rate and Efficiency of Gain of Growing Swine

Abstract

Nine experiment stations in the North Central Region participated in conducting a cooperative experiment involving 99 pens (556 pigs) at 10 sites. The main comparisons were origin of diet (centrally vs. locally mixed), form of diet (meal vs. pellets) and level of antibiotic supplementation (44 vs. 110 mg./kg. of diet).

Perhaps the most significant results of the cooperative study were that treatments behaved similarly within stations and that there were no station x treatment interactions with exception of the one interaction due to the advantage of pellets over meal in gain/feed when pigs were fed diets prepared locally. Analysis of variance based on pen means demonstrated that none of the treatments significantly affected daily gain. Pelleting and feeding of diets containing the higher level of antibiotic resulted in significant, but very small, improvements in gain/feed ratio. Significant differences were found among stations for both response criteria, i.e., rate of gain and gain/feed, but the design of the experiment did not permit a delineation of causes.
