Space Allowances for Lambs on Slotted Floors

University of Illinois, Urbana1

Abstract

Several investigations were conducted to study the influence of space allowances of 0.37 m.2, 0.56 m.2, 0.76 m.2, and 0.93 m.2 on the performance of both native earlyweaned lambs and Texas feeder lambs. The performance of both types of lambs was not significantly effected by the space allowance. The lambs adjusted to their environment with no difficulty. Manure did not accumulate on the slotted floors. Diethystilbestrol (3 mg.) implants increased gains (significant P<.05) but also increased the occurrence of vaginal and/or rectal prolapse.

Footnotes

1 Studies were conducted at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center, Simpson, Illinois.
